Read the following passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
Trees are among the most important natural resources on Earth. They provide us with oxygen, food, medicine, shade and timber. Trees also help to prevent soil erosion and reduce the effects of climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Many animals depend on trees for shelter and food. In a small village called Kijani, people used to cut down trees carelessly for firewood and building materials. After several years, the village experienced severe soil erosion and water shortages. The villagers realized that their actions were harming the environment. The village leaders decided to start a tree-planting campaign. Every family was encouraged to plant at least five trees each year. Schools, religious institutions and community groups joined the campaign. The villagers also learned about the importance of protecting young trees from animals and fires.
After few years, the village became greener and more beautiful. Water sources improved, soil erosion decreased and the community enjoyed cleaner air. The campaign taught everyone that caring for the environment is everyone’s responsibility.
